The Confluence of Nature, Values and Knowledge : Guidance by Guru Advaita Umranikar
29th July, 2026 : To commemorate Nature Conservation Day and Guru Purnima, N.E.M.S. School organized a special cultural and educational program for students of Classes 5 to 7. Renowned retired educator and author, Mrs. Advaita Umranikar, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Attendees paid tribute to Maharishi Vyas with a floral garland, followed by the symbolic worship of a Tulsi sapling. Highlighting the cultural significance of the day, students delivered presentations on the history of Guru Purnima and narrated stories illustrating the sacred bond between mentors and disciples. Highlighting the philosophy that "Nature is also a Guru," the students recited a poignant poem by the legendary G. D. Madgulkar. Reflecting environmental awareness, a student also recited a self-composed poem concerning the decline of bird populations.
Through creative placard demonstrations, the young participants illustrated the virtues humanity can learn from natural elements like trees, rivers, the sun, and birds. A key highlight of the event was an interactive interview session where students directly engaged with Mrs. Umranikar to learn about her literary journey. Notably, her story 'Chimnicha Gharta' (The Sparrow's Nest) has been featured in the revised Class 6 Marathi curriculum, making the face-to-face interaction highly inspiring for the students. In a heartwarming coincidence, school faculty members Shivani Phadke and Akshada Inamdar revealed they were former students of the chief guest. They shared moving tributes, expressing their gratitude toward their mentor. Addressing the assembly, Mrs. Umranikar urged the students to cultivate reading habits, embrace storytelling, and actively participate in environmental conservation. Concluding the address, all the students took a collective pledge: "We shall honor our mentors, keep the flame of knowledge alive, uphold our core values, and protect the environment. "Demonstrating leadership, the students independently anchored the entire event and delivered the vote of thanks. School Headmistress, Smt. Hemangi Deshmukh, commended the students for their active participation and applauded the overall success of the initiative.
